NCWT MEMBER

Joe Smith

Combined Turning and Carving Techniques
Joe first showed several of his platters and projects, explaining his thoughts and how he made each beautiful piece. He shared with us several references and demonstrated hand carving of letters, leaves, etc. Below are some pictures of Joe's demonstration.
Mahogany Wall Art

Palm leaves carved and burned.

Oak Burl Platter

The letter 'I' is used for the edge pattern. Joe says many of his designs are originated from carved letters.

Big Leaf Maple Burl

Fish scale carving used for edge design.

Redwood Burl

The edge pattern is inspired by the ancient Egyptian carvings of Pharoh's hair in clay articles Joe had studied at the Cleveland Museum of Art

Cherry Bowl

Platter Blank with Finished Rim

Joe shared his Demo Notes and some information on Incised Lettering.

Joe recommends the following reference material:

Woodturning: A Sourcebook of Shapes by John Hunnex
500 Wood Bowls no author but distributed by Lark Books
Lettercarving in Wood by Chris Pye
Essential Woodcarving Techniques by Dick Onians

Joe also shared his choice of tools, techniques, etc.:
  • Pfeil carving tools for standard chip carving
  • Flexcut tools for palm chisels
  • Sharpen with leather strop and honing compound, never use a grinder

Joe then showed his technique for letter carving as described in his article above.

Then he carved a leaf, using palm chisels to carve and texture the leaf then using a rotary tool to carve away the outline to provide relief.
