President's Turn
by George Raeder

I would first like to remind everyone that the next three regular meetings of NCWT are especially important.

  • Our October meeting involves the election of officers for the 2005-2006 two-year term.

  • In November, Stuart Batty will be the featured demonstrator, with extra says available for hands-on instruction.

  • In December, we have our always-popular, hopefully-lucrative, annual auction to benefit the club treasury.

Your current Board of Directors has assembled a strong slate of candidates for the Board of Directors 2205-2006 term, for your approval at the October meeting. As always, nominations of additional candidates will be entertained from the floor before voting. The Board's slate of proposed candidates is:

  • President - Rick Maier

  • Vice-President - Joe Smith

  • Secretary - Don Wilhelm

  • Treasurer - Paul Kosmos

  • Newsletter Editor - Brian Becker

  • Directors at Large: (TWO to be elected): Don Karr, Don Morehead, Tom Wisnieski

As discussed at the September meeting, Stuart Batty will be available for full-day, hands-on learning sessions at Rockler's for a limited number of NCWT members for several days immediately prior to the November club meeting demonstrations on November 6 and 7. ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN ONE OR MORE OF THESE HANDS-ON SESSIONS MUST PRE-REGISTER BY THE END OF THE OCTOBER 2, 2004 MEETING. NO EXCEPTIONS. We must have our participants known so we can schedule Mr. Batty's time, transportation and lodging and to determine the cost per participant. A sign-up sheet will be available at the meeting or you can call or E-mail Don Gasler at 440-284-2998 or donald.gasler@tri-c.edu PRIOR to the meeting.

The cost of each full-day session will be between $100 and $150, depending on the number of members who sign up, the number of days desired by each participant, and the number of days available from Mr. Batty (maximum of four.) We will work backward from Friday, November 5, to accommodate registered participants.

Lastly, Tim Reid has arranged for Rick Burris from Oil City, PA, to attend our October meeting with a full pick-up truck of cherry burls collected from several timber-clearing loggers in his area. The burls will be for sale, and will range in size from 6"-8" to SEVERAL FEET in diameter! So bring your M & M's... that's as in "muscles" and "money!"

  • Bill Noce sends these links on Sea Urchin Ornaments. Bill has made several of these ornaments and says they are quite fun to make. The ornaments are made from sea urchin shells with a turned wooden finial top and bottom. They are quite colorful and unique. Bill says to be careful because the shells are quite fragile. For more information on sea urchin shells check out http://www.einsteinsemporium.com/life/specimens/lss18.htm and http://www.seashellworld.com.
