President's Turn
by George Raeder

I would like to extend a thank you to all members that participated in the annual ice cream social August 15th.  We had a wonderful day, we renewed contact with the Buckeye Club members, the weather cooperated, and it didn't rain (light drizzle) until after the event was over.

Also, now is the time to begin the process of electing new NCWT Board members for the 2005/2006 term. The current Board will have a slate of pre-determined candidates to fill the positions of President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and two At-Large Directors. In addition, by consensus of the Board, the Newsletter Editor has been added as a third At-Large-Director.

Any  NCWT member who is interested in serving the club in one of the positions can make it known to me at the September meeting, or can nominate any fellow member with their prior consent. Please step up and make a difference in the decision-making process and operation or your club.

The fundamental duties of each office are as follows:

President  - Conduct monthly NCWT  meetings
- Perform liaison with AAW and other clubs
- Conduct periodic NCWT board meetings
- Write the monthly 'President's Turn' newsletter article
- Co-Sign all checks over $500.00
- Coordinate club activities
Vice-President -Conduct meetings in absence of President
- Solicit and organize professional demonstrations
- Research, organize and plan monthly demonstrations and Turn and Learn Projects
- Organize Turn and Learn project at each monthly meeting
Treasurer - Oversee all membership dues collection and records-keeping
- Help organize membership roster and insure roster is up to date
- Maintain club checking account and payments system
- Maintain and balance club assets and expenditures
- Provide a treasurer's report at each monthly meeting
- Insure that AAW dues and memberships are recorded and reported to AAW
Secretary - Maintain minutes of all monthly meetings
- Send cards of thanks, condolence, congratulations, etc., as events warrant
At-Large Director - Attend Board meetings
-Contribute to discussion and vote on all Board decisions

MEETING NOTES

  • Two Craft Supplies Certificates will be placed in the Club Raffle each of the next three months. Check out Craft Supplies USA or contact George Raeder for information on monthly specials.

  • Former Member Ron Karstensen is undergoing multiple bypass surgery and needs to sell some of his tools. He was asking to sell the tools at a lot price. The club discussed and approved the purchase of Ron's tools at Ron's asking price. The tools are to be auctioned at the Club December Auction. A win-win situation for Ron and for NCWT.

  • Thanks to new member Bill Blasic who donated a Stud Buddy for the club raffle. Also, many thanks to Mike Novak of Woodcraft, Bedford Heights, for some great wood for the raffle. The raffle this month made $189.

  • Turn and Learn sole entry was Don Gassler with his natural edged bell.

  • Dues to become an NCWT member are $55 - $35 for national AAW dues and $20 for local NCWT dues. Any member of NCWT member must also be a member of AAW, but if you already have a current membership in AAW, you need only pay the $20 local fee. See Treasurer Jim Bohmer.

  • Special Thanks to Tom Wisnieski for his donation of a padded work floor mat for turning demonstrators. This will add much to the comfort of demonstrators and help keep them from sliding on the wood chips.

Based upon ideas and requests from the club, a schedule has been built to provide demonstrations and Turn and Learn projects through next February.

  • The Virginia Woodturning Symposium will be held November 6th and 7th at the Artisans Center of Virginia in beautiful Waynesboro. Click here for more info.
  • Mike Novak of Bedford Woodcraft announces a Sorby demo. "We will have two demonstrations on October 6th.  The first will be from 1 PM to 4 PM and the second will be from 6 PM to 9 PM.  We will be having a sale on Sorby tools that will be huge." Keep the dates in mind!!

  • The Great Lakes Woodcarving Show will be held September 25 and 26, 2004 in Strongsville. Categories for woodturners include bowl forms, platter forms, closed or lidded, miniatures, and all others. There are still tables left. Please sign up with Jim Brindle to display your works!! Donations of items for the hourly raffle prizes are also required from those exhibiting.

The Woodcarving Show grand prize for turning, donated by our club, will be determined by competition among club members. The club will pay $100 to the winner of the competition for this piece.

The Woodcarving Show raffle grand prize this year is a carved Noah's Ark. The Woodcarver's would appreciate any pairs of wooden animals, carved or turned, to add to the ark.

  • Jim Pugh has had many requests for info on where he gets his laser pointer for his hollowing tool. Check out http://www.calpaclasers.com/laser_pointers.html.  Jim also suggests a look at this website containing many links to turning websites.

  • NCWT Member Marc Schreiber sends an update from his new location in Oklahoma.

A quick note to let you guys know that I made it to OK in one piece, and am pretty much settled in.  Still waiting for a lawn to be installed, and still have some boxes to unpack.

Managed to get a new lathe, Jet 1442,  also got the garage organized (Picture taken just after I got the lathe and before I installed shelves to get stuff off the floor.) enough to be able to stand  comfortably in front of it and do some turning.  Joined the local club, North East Oklahoma Wood Turning Association (www.NEOWTA.com ).  We have just about 85 members, and at least 60 of them showed up for the July meeting which featured members jigs and fixtures just like NCWT's.  Same kind of membership mix as NCWT.  Ron Fleming is an active member but was at the National for our July regular and board meetings.

We are in the process of trying for 501c(3) status.  Any help or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.  Those on the committee are getting the necessary forms from the AAW.

Keep on turning.  If any of you are going to be at the SWAT (formerly "Texas Turn or Two) Symposium in Oct I'll see you there.

    Keep on turning.
