President's
Turn
by George Raeder
First, I would like to invite everyone to our annual NCWT
ice cream social. My wife and I are fortunate to again be hosting this
event for all NCWT and Buckeye woodturners on Sunday, August 15th from
2:00 to 4:00 plus. Please come and enjoy our remaining gardens and the
friendship and comradery of our fellow members. I personally plan on
eating lots of ice cream because I'm told it ha no calories, no fat,
and no cholesterol. Believe me?
Second,
a brief story about the neurotic pursuit of interesting and exotic
wood. While on recent vacation to Vancouver, BC, I saw a beautifully
executed bowl made of yellow cedar burl in a gallery. Being told old
growth yellow cedar was grown on Vancouver Island, but rather rare, I
was determined to find some.
Wandering
as usual when we vacation, we stopped at a local lumberyard northwest
of Victoria in Sooke, BC. None there! Sent to Northcoast Hardwoods
nearby. None there, either, but since it was 'Northcoast' I had to buy
two small pieces of Black Limba and a small bubbinga burl. These folks
in particular, as well as all Canadians we met, were extremely helpful
and friendly. And besides, they referred to rare and exotic wood as
'erotic wood' because of the neurotic people that pursued and bought
it. Boy, do they have us figured out!
Then
sent to L & E Hardwoods 10 km away. None there! Small mom and pop
sawmill operation anyway. They graciously called ahead to 'Mike' at
Simmons Hardwoods, 25 km away. He had some yellow cedar. Hurrah! Drove
north of Sooke, BC to a very large sawmill operation owned and
operated by one person, Mike, a very accommodating fellow. After an
hour of looking through maple burls, large hemlock slabs beautiful
clear red cedar planks (3" X 12" X 10'), and lots of yellow
cedar boards, we settled on a piece of old growth 3" X 12" X
26" (to fit in a suitcase) straight grained yellow cedar for
$22.00 American. He had just one week before sold all of his yellow
cedar burl wood to a local carver. Just my luck! But at least now I
have hopes of turning two special bowls worthy of my neurotic pursuit
of an erotic exotic wood.
Editors
Note - According to the President's wife, everything from clothing to
gifts that returned from the trip that were accompanied in the
suitcases by the cedar are now permanently mothproofed!

Safe
Journey Irving. We Will Remember You!

Irving
Olsen is moving to Tucson, Arizona this month. We will always remember
Irving for his extremely generous contribution of matching funds to
help buy the club's One Way lathe. Irving committed to donate an
amount equal to the the donations of the rest of the club, making the
purchase possible.
Irving
will be 91 this year. He recently competed in a National Photography
Contest, taking 3rd place, and will continue his photographic
artistry.
As
a turner, Irving says that he very much valued the information and
demonstration that the 'club' has given him. He specially thanks
'Larry, Jim, and George' for their many private instructions. "There is nothing like a club who will share, and NCWT
SHARES!"
(Irving Olsen, right, with NCWT President George Raeder.)
