President's Turn
by George Raeder

Our upcoming regular meeting on July 3rd will also serve as our almost annual 'bring your jigs and fixtures day', along with your explanations of their purpose and use. All of us have created useful tools, gadgets, jigs and other implemented ideas that have made the woodturning process easier, better or faster. Maybe it's a jig to reproduce multiple parts or procedures. Maybe it's a turning tool that has an unusual grind for a specific cutting operation. Unless you plan on patenting your idea, sharing information with other club members is what our organization is all about. All of us can benefit from each individuals' inventiveness.

I will have several items to present. How about each of you bringing in your favorite woodturning or related aids for discussion?

Guest  Demonstrator

Is it you?????

Do you have a favorite tool, jig, fixture, technique or work to share with your fellow NCWT members?
You can be our Guest Demonstrator. In a few short minutes you can make someone else's woodworking experience much easier and more enjoyable.

Bring your stuff and share with all of us on July 3 for our ultimate Show and Tell

IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT FROM OUR CLUB LIBRARIAN!

Please return all VHS tapes and books
belonging to North Coast Wood Turners Library.
We have many tapes and books that have been missing in action for sometime.  We would like them found and returned so other members can learn from and enjoy them. Thank you.

MEETING NOTES

  • We received a request for a donation to the Craft Emergency Relief Fund. This fund is reported to provide aid to professional woodturners in times of loss or natural tragedy. Information can be found at www.craftemergency.org. The club decided to gather further information on the organization and history before donating.  King Heiple volunteered to gather information.
    • In requesting information from AAW, King received this response from Mary Lacer.

      Mr. Heiple,
The Craft Emergency Relief Fund is a legitimate nonprofit organization.  They have been in existence for many years and help artists who have lost their shop and often their home as well due to a fire or other catastrophic event.
      Best regards,
      Mary
    • After researching further, King writes:
      To all:
I now feel with this that I have done what was asked, i.e. to find out
the validity of their request for a $100 dollar donation.  Three
comments: 1] their overhead rate is reasonably low for such a group,
they are giving away 61% of what they collect. 2] I noted on the AAW
web site that there could be restricted donations, i.e. for help to
woodturners only, not other crafts. 3] Bottom line I would be in favor
and besides, note that this would fit well with our 501(c)3 status
should we ever get looked at by IRS.  You might want to look at their
web site if you haven't already done so.
      King
  • Craft Supply, USA has again donated gift certificates for our raffle. Ten $15  certificates have been donated. In addition, There is a promotion going... If you can get a $1000 order from one source they will give a 10 to 15% discount.  They have a series of promotions going on. See www.woodturnerscatalog.com
  • We auctioned off two pieces of Norfolk Island Pine left by Bill Sullivan for the club. The small piece was won by Jack Tibits for $25 and the large piece for $55 to Tom Olechiewski. We can't wait to see what is made from these wonderful blocks of wood. Bill left a handout on turning the pine. A printable copy is here.
