Turning Techniques and Design
Day 1     Day 2

Chris Stott came from North Lincolnshire, England, to NCWT as part of a 79 day North American Tour.

He started his demonstration with a bit of spindle turning, using the skew to make a clean cut from the square, then roughing and spindle gouges to form the spindle design.

Rick Maier examines the turned spindle while others concentrate on Chris.

Next was a bit of skew exercise. Chris cuts the taper on the end of the spindle and mounts in the headstock directly, requiring less pressure and reduced bowing.

Chris teaches that curves and proportions are important, as demonstrated in a simple weed pot.

After a brief discussion on scrapers, Chris made a box in under three minutes. He then went on to explain different types of boxes and make this small box.

Getting into a little more shape and skill level, Chris made a finial box.

Moving on to multi-center work, Chris makes the hedgehog, turned on two axes -

and the tall female form, turned on three axes.
Tired of looking for a block of wood to drive in his spur center, Chris quickly makes a mallet.
Now comes the natural edged goblet.
