President's
Turn
by George Raeder
Listen up
everyone. Don't even think about missing the NCWT meeting weekend of
June 5th and 6th. Stuart Batty is scheduled for a two-day
demonstration that should surpass all others in the past. Several of
us saw his demos at the Cincinnati Symposium in October, 2003, and
several others from NCWT attended his two-day private session at
Rockler's in November. He is engaging, humorous, and a wonderful
teacher, and probably the best purely skilled woodturner I have ever
witnessed. He is also very fast. However, he talks the audience
through every procedure in terms we understand. A real treat awaits
us, so plan on a long weekend in early June to learn from a
woodturning master.
Having
purchased two Nova 3000 lathes last month, as anticipated we are in
need of several volunteers to form a team to build heavy wooden bases
for them. The bases are envisioned to provide support, have a lockable
compartment to hold all the pertinent accessories, and possibly have a
fold-out work surface when the lathe is in use. The lathe and support
base would also be easily separated for transport. A design and a shop
location will e provided, material costs will be covered by NCWT, and
we need YOU to volunteer most of a day to fabricate and assemble the
components. Are you a competent woodworker? Then please help us out
and gain a pleasurable day with your time. See me at the April meeting
to express your interest.

- Woodcraft,
Strongsville, is sponsoring
a pen turning session on April 10th. The session is entitled
Freedom Pens, as the pens are being made for members of the
military. Anyone can to Woodcraft on the 10th and turn a
pen, or you can go and watch. Help support John and the
Strongsville Woodcraft team as they sponsor this great event.
- Woodcraft,
Strongsville, is also sponsoring
an event where you purchase a grab box of wood and from it make
any object, bowl, box, etc. The entries will be judged in June
with winners getting gift certificates to the store. Profits from
the sale of the grab boxes will go to support the purchase of
woodturning and woodworking books for the Strongsville Library.

Is
your shop equipment insurance enough?
Jim Pugh sends this photo of Lyn Hunter's shop after the
California fires last year. All she was able to safe was some
turnings that she had in her car for an upcoming show. Lyn got out
okay, but her shop and equipment was totally gone.
The point made by Jim - "I guess the reason for sending this is to encourage folks to make sure
they have insurance on their shop tools which usually will be over and
above their household insurance."
