President's
Turn
by George Raeder
This month, I would live to convey my thoughts on a subject of growing
concern to many of us, and that is the Rockler store meeting area
deficiencies. Rocker's space has many positive attributes such as
geographic location, cost (free), storage space, access to tool
purchase, hospitality, and the many other accommodations the store continues
to graciously proved for us. However, there are growing complaints
about crowding, safety, noise levels and sight lines during
demonstrations and the sole access/exit stairs. These are valid
concerns.
Our organization continues to grow, and we need to initiate serious
thought about options and alternatives to accommodate our monthly
meetings and storage requirements. The requirements for an alternative
meeting space for the club as it is projected to exist are rather
daunting. In my opinion, the criteria for a monthly meeting space are
as follows.
-
Meeting
location must be reasonably central to the geographic distribution
of our membership and easily accessed by main roads and/or
freeways.
-
Space
must be available at the same time and day of each month for
meetings. Additional time throughout the month would be desirable
for "hands-on" sessions, board meetings, etc.
-
Space
must accommodate 130-150 members and guests for professional
demonstrations in addition to regular meetings of 80-100 people.
-
Approximately
300-350 square feet of permanent and secure storage space must be
available for lathes, library, tool storage, video equipment,
wood, etc., in addition to chair and table storage.
-
Chairs
and chair storage must be available for a minimum of 120 people.
-
Various
sturdy tables should be provided for available for donuts and
coffee, "show-and-tell" display, workbench functions
during demonstrations, etc.
-
Space
should be reasonably monitored against theft and vandalism.
-
Insurance
coverage must be available on a NCWT pay or co-pay basis.
-
Adequate
parking is required within a reasonable walking distance.
-
Space
must be building-code approved for assembly purposes.
-
Access
to storage is required for movement and transport of lathes and
equipment.
-
Meeting
space should not impact other building functions with noise, dust,
parking impact, etc., generated by NCWT meetings.
-
The potential
for modest renovation work would be desirable to allow NCWT to
build shelving, bulletin boards, high shelves for TV monitors,
etc.
-
A raised
stadium seating arrangement or capability of using temporary
risers would be desirable.
These requirements are significant, although somewhat wishful, and
can probably only be satisfied by a governmental body, a large
church, a arge retirement facility, a business directly or
indirectly associated with woodworking or similar entity. Any of
these organizations would need a reason to accommodate the
functions of NCWT, and would probably require a hold-harmless
agreement to protect themselves. This, in itself, creates
significant ramifications for the club.
In conclusion, I ask that members who are concerned about the
future of our organization begin to think about this situation,
inquire about the potential meeting space they encounter and certainly
voice their opinions and ideas concerning this growing problem.
Thank you in advance for your contributions.
