President's
Turn
by George Raeder
Those of you unable to attend the Ohio
Valley Woodturners Guild Symposium outside Cincinnati on October
17 to 19 missed a wonderful opportunity. By my count, we had eleven
NCWT members that attended the weekend activities and, without
exception, all had a good time and enjoyed a wonderful learning
experience. Two highlights for me were the Friday night
'Bowl-Off', and the several demonstrations by Stuart Batty. The
'Bowl-Off' was an extraordinary humorous, educational, competitive
demonstration by Mike Mahoney and Stuart Batty, both turning large
(15") bowls on identical lathes from virtually identical pieces
of roughed-out wood. The competition came from completing quality
bowls in the fastest turning time. The humor came from the constant
needling, banter and insults back and forth between two obviously very
good friends. The education came from their continuous explanations of
vastly different techniques using the same tools to achieve identical
bowls of the same level of quality. When passed around, the two
bowls could not be identified with their maker. As
you may know, Mike, from Provo, Utah, and Stuart, from England, but
residing with Mike, are both production turners. Mike produces
prodigious numbers of salad bowls for the wholesale market. Stuart has
a lifetime of spindle work, bowl turning, gallery work, and teaching
experience working with his father, Allan Batty. All three are
truly superb woodturners and very good instructors. The
various demonstrations by Stuart Batty were the best I have been
privileged to experience. He is fast, extremely accurate, precise in
his movements, and all the while talking and demonstrating exactly
what he is doing and why! After very specific sharpening, he
shows you which tool to use, how to make a cut, why you should
use that cut and what happens if you don't. He astounded me when he
made a 3" high goblet, on a 1/2" thick base with a 15"
long by consistently 3/32" diameter stem in between from a block
of green cherry. But the true amazement came when he looked once at
the reveal in the base (~1 1/4" in diameter), set the goblet
aside, chucked as waste block, cut a tenon, and perfectly press fit
the goblet on the first try without using any measuring instruments. It
takes me many tries, fifteen minutes, with instruments, and they still
fly off. In
all, a good time and worthwhile experience was had by approximately
220 turners, and if you ever have an opportunity to see Stuart Batty
demonstrate, do not pass it up.
