President's Turn
by George Raeder

First of all, I would like to apologize for being out of the loop regarding phone calls, emails, and other general correspondence related to North Coast activities for the last month. We have had limited electrical power, temporary telephone, no computer, no water, and little else for four weeks due to the super sized flood which devastated our property.

Second, I would like to offer a belated thank you to all that attended the Ice Cream Social and were the last to see the gardens. They are now mostly gone.

Third and most important, I profusely thank the army of people from North Coast that immediately arrived unannounced and helped with the carrying, cleaning, trashing, restoring, organizing, and the many other dirty hard work tasks necessary to excavate the flooded contents of the lower level of our home. The value of these efforts to save machinery, equipment, and salvageable personal property is beyond calculation. The memory of these people, some of whom I did not know well, has made an indelible impression and has had a profound impact on my wife and me. Thank you. THANK YOU!!!
If there is any way that I can ever repay you, please make sure that I know.

In addition, some of you left buckets, fans, boots, gloves, etc. behind. I must apologize for my demeanor and memory loss as to what items are yours. Please se me to claim anything you left at our house.

Your president is in the process of returning to duty! Thanks for your patience.

North Coast Woodturners at the Lorain County Fair
by Jim Pugh

The Lorain County Fair is history and several members of the NCWT were awarded ribbons for their turnings.

Dick Gray received a blue ribbon (First Place) for his pierced hollow form in the "turnings over 12 inches" category and another blue ribbon for his covered box in the "turnings under 12 inches" category.

Jim Shuster received a red ribbon (Second Place) for his sphere that contains many parts in the “turnings under 12 inches” category.

Jim Pugh received white ribbon (Third Place) for both entries, a large hickory platter and an ash crotch bowl.

Dick Gray also entered his gorgeous lamp in general woodworking it earned a blue ribbon. He then took the "Best of Show, woodworking" with his pierced hollow form. It seems he wasn't done there because he also entered some items in the "antiques" category and got some blue ribbons and a “best of show” there as well.

I think we will invite Dick to sit out next year so some of the rest of us have a chance......well, not actually, Dick has thrown down the gauntlet and the rest of us had better rise to the challenge or we can sit back and watch his dust.

August MEETING NOTES

  • The Willard Wood is being stored by King Heiple and George Raeder. We will be soon deciding how to cut and price the wood and set up for our club sale.  Click here for an inventory of the wood King has in inventory. If you would like some of this wood as is, please contact King or George. Soon it will be cut into smaller pieces for sale as turning blanks.

  • Chairs - Dennis Taylor has brought in several chairs that were donated by Sterling, Inc. The Fairlawn company has bought new chairs and donated their old ones to NCWT. Also, Rocklers is putting a request into next year's budget for some additional chairs. As things stand right now, we will not have to buy any chairs soon.

  • Volunteers - We need some volunteers to man the demo cameras and sound equipment. Jim Duxbury has moved south and Don is not always available. We need a couple people to step in as substitutes.  Contact Don Gasler if you can help out.
  • August Raffle - $134
  • One Tree Project Winners
