President's
Turn
by George Raeder
Through some unexpected
circumstances, I did not have time to write a lengthy and thoughtful
message for this month's newsletter. I would ask each of you, in
the extra time you have that you would have spent reading my message,
to count your blessings. Each of us has
many.
Editorial from Brian Becker -
For those of you who do not yet know, the day after the annual NCWT
ice cream social, George and Pat Raeder were victims of a devastating
flood. The Yellow Creek, normally flowing peacefully through the back
of their property, rose 12 feet above flood stage. The beautiful
gardens Pat and George worked so hard to create over the past 23 years
and which they graciously shared with us and many others, were covered
with river sand and silt, uprooted trees and displaced foliage. Their
many works of art were swept to unknown destinations. The water
crashed into their home and covered the entire basement and its
contents, including George's lathes and power tools, with one quarter
inch of sand and silt. In addition, the raging waters broke their fuel
oil line and mixed fuel oil with the sand and silt covering their
lifetieme of possessions.
Many, many people have worked very hard for the past week trying
to clear out the Raeder basement and salvage as many of Pat and
George's belongings as possible, but there is a long road ahead.
George and Pat can never begin to thank the many people that have come
to help them in this time of incredible need. So many Northcoast
Woodturners and Buckeye Woodturners, coordinated by Jim Bohmer, have
come out to help the Raeders recover from this incredible devastation.
Sincere thanks to all, and please continue to keep Pat and George in
your prayers and thoughts. Even with God's help, it will be many, many
months before they are able to recover from this disaster.

The NCWT/Buckeye Ice Cream Social
was July 20th at George Raeder's home in Bath. Please
click here for some photo's of the social. The social, which
this year was a joint event between North Coast Woodturners
and Buckeye Woodturners and Woodworkers, was a great
success.

JULY MEETING
NOTES
An
individual in Willard, Ohio who's grandfather owned a sawmill was
selling the wood from his mill as a lot. The wood was for sale as
a lot. Jim Bohmer and George Raeder looked at the wood and thought
it would be a good way to raise some money for the club to buy the
wood as a lot and sell it at a good price to members of the
club. Don Gasler moved to buy the wood as a lot and Tom
Heffernan seconded. Vote was for purchase of the wood. The
wood was purchased and is stored by King Heiple and George Raeder.
More info to come in the future.
Chairs
- Rockler said they are not in a
position at this time to buy more chairs. North Coast discussed
purchasing and owning the chairs themselves. Motion by King Heiple
to purchase 20 chairs and 10 stools, 15/15, or some mix at the the
discretion of the board. Second by Ralph Abelt. Motion passed in
the vote. Chester Gordon volunteered t research the chairs with
the help of Tom Hogarth.
- Volunteers
- In response to George's
request, we had several volunteers.
Raffle - June

The
Great Lakes Wood Carving Exhibit is September 27 and 28, again in
Strongsville. Anyone wanting to exhibit or sell
their work must sign up and sign a contract and turn it in to
Jim Pugh by the end of the August meeting. NCWT will again purchase the tables, but
we must have enough people to sign up to support
them. Sharing a table is allowed. There is a
competition that includes six categories in
woodturning. Click here to see the Show
flyer.
Thanks
to Jim Bohmer's daughter, Lori, who sent us some great pictures of the totem at
Arrowmont. Click here to see them.
A
walnut tree was salvaged by George Raeder and kept for
the club to purchase. The large sections were $25 and the smaller
sections $10-15. Proceeds go to the club treasury. If
interested, please let one of the board members know at the
meeting and they will make arrangements with George to pick up the
wood.
L.E.T.S.
Turn - In October,
2003, NCWT will present another hands-on "L.E.T.'s
Turn" program on spindle turning, bowl turning and tool
sharpening. This "Less Experienced Turner
Session" involves a nominal registration fee
and registrations are accepted on a first-come
basis. Participants will have hands-on lathe
experience under the guidance of more experienced
NCWT members. Stay tuned for complete details and
registration information.
Dues
to become an NCWT member are $55 - $35 for national AAW dues and
$20 for local NCWT dues. Any member of NCWT
member must also be a member of AAW, but if you
already have a current membership in AAW, you
need only pay the $20 local fee. See Treasurer
Jim Bohmer.
