NCWT JUNE FEATURED DEMONSTRATION
DAVID HOUT -
HOUT BOWL SKEW
| Dave takes a minute to update NCWT members on AAW events and future symposiums | |
| The Hout bowl skew. Currently the tool can be purchased only at Woodcraft, but starting in September it will be available from other dealers. | |
| Dave says
for a start, it's time to get back to basics. We
need to consider the grain of the wood and cutting
downhill on the grain. Smaller to larger on the outside
and larger to smaller on the inside. Dave uses a relatively standard bowl gouge on the outside, using a shearing cut for the final cuts. Essentially, the gouge is turned upside down and rotated slightly until it starts to cut. Control the depth by moving the handle back and forth. Done properly, this cut cannot catch. |

The bowl
skew is used on the inside wall by placing flat on the
rest. That is why the rectangular shape. Do not rotate
the tool or it will catch. You are looking for the tool to produce long straight fibers. The tool is not quite as good on the bottom because of the shallow flute, so you have to move slowly and carefully. |

To start
the cut, ride the bevel and move handle to the right
until it starts to cut. Drop the handle slightly and
follow the bowl. The tool is made for making finishing
cuts. "Idea is to eliminate sanding. Turning is fun, sanding is boring." |
|
Sharpening the tool is similar to sharpening a scraper but with a little more back angle. Set the rest for the bevel and swing the handle back and forth. |
