President's
Turn
by George Raeder
This month I am pleased to report that through
the efforts of Marc Schreiber, Brian Becker and Jim Pugh, we will soon
have ready for distribution a current membership roster and directory
of sources for turning supplies. An attempt will be made to keep each
document current with copies published periodically. In addition, we
also plan to initiate the practice of giving each new club member a
‘welcome package’ of the above documents for their immediate use.
Also this month, I again come hat-in-hand to ask for volunteers for a
variety of tasks. I am hopeful that at the July meeting several of you
will volunteer for the following necessary short and long term jobs to
help NCWT.
1.
We need a volunteer to procure and transport the ice cream and
related toppings to the NCWT/Buckeye Social at my home scheduled for
Sunday, July 20. All costs will be reimbursed from the treasury.
Quantities to be determined at the July meeting.
2.
We will need someone to act as an initial parking director at the
social until parking rows are established and the parking pattern is
obvious to subsequent attendees. We anticipate about 50 cars, most of
which will be parked on an adjacent lot. Maybe someone who has been to
my home would step forth for this task.
3.
Rockler has been unable to help purchase additional chairs for our
meetings. Could someone agree to research sources, costs,
availability, etc., for NCWT to establish a budget and purchase
additional seating? Maybe even some higher chairs for a two-tier
viewing of demos? Used chairs could also be a possibility.
4.
Tony Nasca has done a great job with the monthly raffle. However,
we need someone to become a designated assistant to Tony to help
announce raffle winners, etc., and automatically fill in if Tony is
unable to attend the monthly meeting. Maybe a regular attendee would
step up to help out on a semi-permanent basis.
5.
We need someone to take charge of the Turn-and-Learn table,
preparing the table with cups and voting biscuits, collect the entrees
and put away the materials at the end of the meeting. Several people
have taken on this responsibility on the spur of the moment, but we
need a couple of people to designate as primary and assistant.
We need a noise level enforcer. Minimum qualifications are 6’8”
height, 280 pounds, loud voice, strong, intimidating, and comes to
every meeting. LaMoyne
Porter does not qualify because he’s just too nice.
Thank you in advance for considering these volunteer opportunities. |

June Demonstration
David Hout · Hout Bowl Skew
Thanks to AAW Board Member Dave Hout for his demonstration of his
new “bowl skew”. Dave demonstrated how the tool could be
used for making fine finishing cuts down the side of the bowl.
To quote Dave, “The idea of the tool is to eliminate sanding.
Turning is fun, sanding is boring.
The tool is currently made by Crown and available only from
Woodcraft. Starting in September, the tool will be available in
other stores.

Show-and-Tell

Bob Skinner discusses a segmented turning with Don Gasler. |
Works from beginners to seasoned veterans are welcome on the
Show-and-Tell table. One thing noticed and discussed by all -
the quality just keeps improving.
Lots of
beautiful art to ponder and learn from.

JUNE
MEETING NOTES
- Rockler is not in a position at this time to
purchase more chairs. The NCWT Board will contact the other
clubs that meet at Rockler and see if we can work out a deal
to share in the cost of additional chairs.
- The AAW National Convention is in Pasadena, CA
this year. George Raeder has applications.
- We would like the names of
spouses/significant others for special communications
and summer gatherings. Please list your partner’s name on
the attendance sheet so we can collect the names.
- Thad Badowski will be taking orders for long
and short sleeve club shirts at the April meeting. Denim and
sweatshirts are $27, golf shirts are $18 ($20 XXL). He will
keep up the order taking for the next couple months.
Please pay in advance.
- Name tag orders will be taken, see Rick Maier.
$4.
- Discussion was held on library purchases.
Some of the discussion pertained to keeping library
items on a database, preferring videos over written books,
member donations, need for fire systems, need for bigger
cabinet or vault for library items, purchase of tapes vs.
DVDs, current expenditures of over $400 per year.
- Charity work – Inquiry in to the
desire to do some charity work toward Christmas indicated that
2/3 to ¾ of club members would be very interested in doing
this type of project. The NCWT board will look further into
charities and lists of potential items that would be desired.
- Members!!!
Check your books, magazines and tapes for any North Coast
library items. There are several items that have been out a long time and
need to be returned so others can enjoy.
Please help us get these items back to the NCWT library.
- Raffle Income - $157.00. Thanks for your support and please keep the donations coming. Please thank (patronize) Cutting Edge and Craft Supplies for their donation of gift certificates.

The
Great Lakes Wood Carving Exhibit is September 27 and 28, again in Strongsville.
Anyone wanting to exhibit or sell their work must sign up and sign a
contract by July 15. NCWT will again purchase the tables, but we must
have enough people to sign up to support them. Sharing a table is
allowed. There is a competition that includes six categories in
woodturning. More info will
be provided at the July meeting.
-
The
One Tree Project was liked so much by the Shaker Nature Center
that they want to keep the exhibit intact. They asked us to forgive the
auction price based prize and have the articles judged by a panel of
turners instead. Discussion
indicated this would be quite acceptable to NCWT.
-
Per
Dave Hout -
The 2004 AAW National Symposium will be held in Orlando, FL. The 2005 AAW
National Symposium will be held in Kansas City, MO. Start making those
travel plans now! Note! Cleveland is a possibility for a future national
symposium site! Local chapters need to lobby the national committee to make
this option a reality. Bring your ideas and comments on this subject to the
July NCWT meeting.
-
L.E.T.S.
Turn - In October, 2003, NCWT will present another hands-on
³L.E.T.¹s Turn² program
on spindle turning, bowl turning and tool sharpening. This "Less
Experienced Turner Session" involves a nominal registration fee and
registrations are accepted on a first-come basis. Participants will have
hands-on lathe experience under the guidance of more experienced NCWT
members. Stay tuned for complete details and registration information.
-
Meeting
Parking – A reminder that Best Buy does not want us to park along
Brookpark Road in front of the store. We should park on the west side of
the lot in front of the closed stores.
-
Joe
Smith set up a wonderful display of his works at the Brooklyn library. (Photo
below.) Congratulations, Joe!

-
