President's Turn
by George Raeder

David Ellsworth is this month's guest demonstrator, and he is truly one of the premier woodturners in the country. Helping to establish woodturning as a a contemporary art form since the early 1970's by creating natural edge forms, by creating hollow vessels with extremely small openings, by using spalted and previously passed-over woods and by refining elegant shapes, David Ellsworth has become a leader in our field. He is a turner, a teacher, a critic, active in AAW and has many objects in museums and private collections throughout the country.

I understand he will turn a natural edge bowl and an end grain bowl on Saturday, and a hollow vessel on Sunday, along with presenting a slide show and talk about his work.

It has also come to my attention that NCWT has no definitive record of its physical assets. With previous excellent stewardship, NCWT has accumulated significant assets in lathes, grinders, tools, audio and visual equipment, various support components such as extension cords and an extensive library. Yet, with the exception of the library, we apparently do not have a comprehensive inventory of these items.

Therefore, as one of my previously-stated goals to get more people involved with NCWT, I am asking for one or more volunteers to come forward at the April meeting to assist Jim Pugh in the investigation, documentation, and cataloging of all NCWT assets. All items will be identified, tagged as necessary, valued for corporate purposes, entered into a master list and computerized for easy access and updating.

Now is your opportunity to spend a limited amount of time to help NCWT move forward and become a better organization. Please help us out. Thank you!

April 5-6, 2003 Meeting
Two- day demonstration by professional turner David Ellsworth.

No charge for members, $25 fee for visitors.
No April Turn and Learn, however, we will have Show and Tell. Please bring your projects; perhaps David will give us an impromptu critique!

Starting in 1965 he studied architecture, fine arts and sculpture at Washington University in St. Louis, New School for Social Research in New York, and the University of Colorado, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Colorado in 1971. David continued at The University of Colorado to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture.

David’s works are shown in Museums throughout the United States, including collections at:

And many others.

David is recognized worldwide as on of the leaders in transforming woodturning into an art form and is one of the founding fathers of The American Association of Woodturners. He has developed many techniques and tools to help in his turning of bowls and hollow forms.

David’s tentative schedule:
Saturday am: Turn a natural top open bowl from half a log.
Saturday pm: Turn a bowl from a whole log.
Sunday am:   Turn a hollow form from a whole log.
Sunday pm:   Discussion session on tool design and sharpening methods, plus a slide show of his 45-year's experience in turning.

Display at Richfield Library – Revised Timetable

Thanks to those people that brought in items for the Richfield Library display.  We have found out from the library that the current display on American Indian Artifacts has not yet been removed and will run until the end of the month.  We will be setting up our display through the first couple weeks of April and it will run until early June.  Those who wish to have their items on display should contact Brian Becker, HOME 330-659-5961/ CELL 330-233-1674. Items can be brought to the April meeting for Show and Tell and left for the Richfield display, however, please see Jim Bohmer or George Raeder at the meeting so that they can get the pieces to Brian. PLEASE MAKE SURE PIECES ARE EITHER SIGNED OR PACKAGED IN A MANNER THAT INCLUDES THE TURNER'S NAME. We want to make sure all of our participating members gets full credit for their work.

The items will be in a locked display area, and be secure. We appreciate your participation.
