President's Turn
by George Raeder

The upcoming March meeting should be an excellent learning opportunity for all ability levels of the membership. For experienced turners, Jim Bohmer will be the featured demonstrator showing us how to turn ‘Dynamic Spheres’ and the race. It is quite an exacting process, but rewarding.

At approximately 1:00 PM, or one hour for lunch after the regular meeting ends, I have volunteered to demonstrate fundamental tool use for less experienced members. I would like to concentrate on why certain tools are used in varying circumstances, what tools are available, how they are used, how the wood reacts to different tool applications, the differences between faceplate and spindle turning using basically the same tools, and spend a little time on chucking options. Everyone is welcome to stay over, and experienced turners may even learn something, as I always learn something from you!

In addition, as announced at the February me3eting, we will have some imported wood blanks available for sale from my recent driving trip through Florida. I gambled that members would be interested in some inexpensive unusual woods that are not generally available locally, so I bought some from two different yards for you to try. Each yard will take future UPS orders.  I have several of each species of Satine, Burmese Padauk, Goncalo Alves, Redheart, Bocote, Laural Oak, and Purpleheart. They range at my cost plus tax from approximately five to sixteen dollars and are from 6X6X2 to 8X8X3 inches in size. The blanks are generally dry and lathe ready, and I have rough turned and finished one blank of each species for you to visualize their potential. Lets see some terrific ‘Show and Tell’ items from the unusual woods.

FEBRUARY MEETING REVIEW

  • We would like spouse’s and significant other’s names for special communications and summer gatherings. Please list your partner’s name on the attendance sheet so we can collect them.
  • Dues are due!!! If you have not yet paid your 2003 dues, please see Jim Bohmer to get up to date.
  • We are building a database for resources. This info will be made into a list for the library and added to the web site.  Please provide a list of your favorite resources to Brian Becker so we can start cataloging the information. Please include name, address, phone number, web address and contact name(s) wherever possible.
  • The new TV monitor, splitters, wiring, etc., done by Jim  Bohmer and Jim Duxbury helped considerably at our St. Leger demo. Many thanks to "the Jims" for their efforts.
  • Thad Badowski will be taking orders for long and short sleeve club shirts at the March meeting.
  • Name tag orders will be taken, see Stan Starry, Jr.
  • Jim Duxbury mentioned a beginning woodworking class given at the Strongsville Rec. Center.  In the $25 class you will build a birdhouse. After attending the class you will be allowed to use the shop tools at any time for $1.50 per hour. This includes planers, router tables, etc. Residency is not required.
  • The Mark St. Leger demo was a huge success.  Mark showed us several skill building projects on the first day. A tippy top, dancing top, egg, a box with threaded lid, and eccentric lidded box (made without special chucks) were demonstrated on the first day. The second day allowed us to see a a wooden flask and an eccentric box made with the Escalon Chuck. Many of Mark's works were on display for us to see. To see a full recap of Mark’s demo please click here.

In a note to King Heiple:

Hi King,

I’m an AAW member in Virginia’s Capital Area Woodturners chapter. When my 3M Power Visor battery pack died, I worked out a method of replacing the batteries rather than pay $60 for a new battery pack from Craft Supplies.  Now I’d like to make a few bucks and give fellow woodturners the opportunity to benefit from my experience.  So, I’m offering to revitalize the old 4-hour battery packs with 10-hour batteries for $25.  These battery packs will most likely last years longer than the original, making them a real bargain.
Details are available on my website at http://www.members.cox.net/dreel

Happy turning,
Dave Reel

From the San Francisco Chronicle...

Bob Stocksdale, the master woodturner and Honorary Lifetime AAW member from Berkley, California passed away last month at the age of 85. Bob’s bowls and turnings are highly valued, and shown in many private collections and museums nationwide. Per Susanne Baizerman, curator of crafts and decorative arts at the Oakland Museum, “He set a standard for woodturners. There are other virtuosos now, but he was the leader of the pack.”

Bob was another of the American pioneers of woodturning. We will remember and miss him.

Display at Richfield Library

We are signed up to display at the Richfield branch of the Akron-Summit County Pubic Library in March.  PLEASE BRING YOUR WELL-PACKED ITEMS TO THE MARCH MEETING. The have a very nice display case, measuring about 6’ wide by 6’ tall, 17” deep, with a floor area about 4’ deep and 8’ wide for larger items.  The display is locked and secure.  Please help us to create the Richfield display and BRING YOUR WELL-PACKED ITEMS TO THE MARCH MEETING. We anticipate the display will run from early March for about 4 to 6 weeks. This will be an opportunity for the North Coast Woodturners to show their works in a beautiful new facility in Richfield where it will be seen by many. Contact Brian Becker, 330-659-5961 (bbec31@adelphia.net) if you have any questions. PLEASE BRING YOUR WELL-PACKED ITEMS TO THE MARCH MEETING. THANKS!

Penturners Rendezvous!

On May 7th, 2003 in Provo Utah at the Holiday Inn motel, penturners from around the globe will congregate to celebrate the re-emerging art of turned pens.

Food, Fun and Good Company await you there!  Wood chips and tall stories will be  flying!  Bring your favorite penturning book to be signed by the author.  Try  your hand at a new technique, or check out what's new in pen kits.  Whether  you're new to penturning or have done it for years, you'll be welcome!

What do you need to do to be included in this group?  Visit the Penturners Rendezvous web page (http://www.turtlewoodworks.com/provo03.htm) and send your information to the link listed there.   There is no charge to register or attend this fun-filled evening of woodturning.  That's right, the Penturners Rendezvous is FREE!

But why Provo Utah?  Well, it's because you'll all want to be there anyway. One of the oldest and largest of the Woodturning Symposiums, the Utah Woodturning Symposium, will be held in Provo Utah on May 8, 9 and 10. Some of the best woodturners from around the world will be demonstrating  at this Symposium.  And if this wasn't enough, on May 7th Craft Supplies USA, better known as The Woodturners Catalog, is holding their Super Wednesday Sale and Open House!  Here you will not only find unbelievable prices on all your fondest equipment and supplies, but there will be demonstrations by renowned woodturning craftsmen all day long!  And there will be 3 demonstrations on advanced penturning!

Learn more about the Penturners Rendezvous by visiting our web page
(http://www.turtlewoodworks.com/provo03.htm).   You'll also find information
