DEMONSTRATIONS
& PROGRAMS
February 1-2, 2003
Guest Demo: MARK ST. LEGER
Mark is a career
carpenter/cabinetmaker who, for the past thirteen years, has been
teaching high school woodshop and sharing his love for turning with his
students. He is an active demonstrator/workshop leader for
woodturning clubs, regional and national symposiums. He is a staff
member at Arrowmont School of the Arts and John C. Campbell Folk School.
Currently he is serving his second term as an AAW Board member and an
active member of the Blue Ridge Woodturners of Southwest Virginia.
His work has been shown at the Artisan Center of Virginia and The Art
Museum of Western Virginia. Mark has been turning for the past 17
years and specializes in small-scale turnings, off-center work, boxes
along with thread chasing and tool making. He enjoys sharing with
others what he has learned, from so many, throughout the years.

President's Turn
by George Raeder
Having been a member of this
association for almost three years, it appears to me that North Coast
has several important functions. The fundamental function of our
meetings is to bring together a membership interested in learning more
about the techniques of woodturning and the equipment and tools
necessary to do so. We accomplish this basic goal through
demonstrations, accessing our library, the "show and tell"
table, the monthly challenge and, of course, through conversation
about our personal turning activities.
However, these meetings also stimulate considerable social value
relative to woodturning. For example, has anyone noticed the almost
complete absence of conversation about recent sporting events,
occupational topics, family problems, etc.? I have, and I think our
members are more focused on their hobby than are members of most other
organizations. After all, we collectively spend about 200 hours, plus
travel time, at each meeting and this time should be spent
constructively on learning, education and better knowing our fellow
members and their abilities.
In addition, various club activities are directed toward charitable
causes, educating the public about the potentials of woodturning,
increasing our membership, demonstrating at outside shows and raising
money to achieve all of the above.
Working with the Board and membership, I would like to focus and
expand all of these activities during my tenure as president.
Hopefully, all of us can make North Coast an even better organization.

please see Jim Bohmer to get up to date.
- We
are building a database for resources.
This info will be made into a list for the library and added to
the web site. Please
provide a list of your favorite resources to one of the Board
Members so we can start cataloging the information. Please include
name, address, phone number, web address and contact name(s)

- In
a vote of members, the NCWT board was approved to discuss a chair
purchase with Rockler’s. Results of the discussion
are to be brought before the membership for final vote in
February.
-
Show
and Tell -
Bring your turnings for show and tell – Look at and study what
others have brought. When
you bring your items, make sure your name is on them. If we don’t
know who made it, we can’t ask how! And, of course, you are likely
to not get the kudos you deserve.
One
Tree Project
Articles made from the Shaker Heights oak tree by members were shown as
part of the Club Challenge (Turn and Learn) phase of the January
meeting. We had several
members explain their turning. Since the wood was quite green and wet, special challenges
were presented to the turners to produce a final object without the
normal roughing/drying/finishing cycle. The objects were nonetheless
quite beautiful and artistic. Congratulations to the turners who
participated in this event. CLICK HERE for pictures and descriptions.
.

These articles were
donated to The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes for their One Tree Project.
A raffle will be held on the opening day, April 1, 2003 and another on
July 2, 2003, where the articles will be auctioned off to raise money
for the Nature Center. Many
thanks to all who participated extended by Jim Heffernan. Interested?
