President's Turn
by George Raeder

My first thought is to thank the membership for asking me to lead this organization for the next two years. I look forward to the challenge of filling the very large shoes that King Heiple has left me, and along with the Board of Directors, will commit my very best efforts to the principles of the club.

One of my first tasks will be to initiate a major thrust into soliciting more membership participation in club meetings and projects, extracurricular activities, demonstrations, education, record keeping, and the like. Understandably, many of you do not have the time to commit to an elected position, but we need volunteers for limited duration tasks to help club progress. Some many take a couple of hours, others may be of longer duration. As you may know, it doesn't take long to plant of row of raspberry plants, but takes many people to pick the berries. We're looking for people to pick berries so we all may benefit.

One of the first things we could accomplished together would be to establish a DATABASE OF RESOURCES. We all access sources for tools, equipment, wood and other materials. By publishing and updating a list, we would all benefit. Therefore,
I am asking each of you to take a few minutes to jot down and submit at the January meeting a short list of your favorite sources for anything related to woodturning. Please include the name, address, phone number, internet address, contact name (if any) and a brief description of each company's products. I'm sure there will be some duplication, but we can sort that our and publish a comprehensive list in the near future.

Thank you in advance for your response to this request, and thank you again for the opportunity to serve as your chapter president.

NCWT President George Raeder
WANTS YOU
more involved with our club!

DECEMBER MEETING REVIEW

Thanks to a great turnout and some fantastic arm-twisting by our chief auctioneer, Tom Nero, our annual auction was again quite a success. We raised $2041.50 thanks to the generous donations of our members and sponsors. Special thanks are extended for the generous donations by:

  • Judy Dittmer, professional turner and recent demonstrator at NCWT (Judy donated the items she turned in her demonstration for our auction)

  • Doll Lumber, donor of several very nice pieces of lumber
  • Woodcraft, Bedford Heights, donor of two large mahogany slabs and several other pieces of lumber and tools
  • Woodcraft, Strongsville, donor of several pieces of lumber and tools
  • Rockler's donor of several turning tools

News Bits

Help Needed for Helper of the Poor by Bev Kan, Great Lakes Woodcarvers
For 12 years,
Thomas Nero has aided the poor with his successful Appalachian project. For 12 years, local residents have filled trucks with housewares, clothing, small appliances and toys to help Americans in need. Now Nero, himself, is looking for assistance. He is searching for someone who is willing to take up the project and run, and continue the work that he started years ago. Health issues, though not serious, and a part time job as a professor at Kent State is forcing him to give up spearheading the collection of goods. He feels now is a good time to turn the reins over to someone new.

Mini-Symposium in Cincy by David Morrical, Vice Pres., Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild
The Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild a chapter of AAW, is presenting a Mini-Symposium October 17-19, 2003.  The Symposium will be located in Southwestern Indiana on the Ohio border.  It is minutes from the Cincinnati airport and four interstate highways.

Five well-known turners will be demonstrating for ten hours each during the three-day Symposium. They are Richard Raffan, Michael Lee, Bonnie Klein, Al Stirt, and Michael Mahoney.

The cost for the three days will be $235, which will include 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, Friday evening dinner, and the Saturday Banquet.  Rooms at the facility are available for $55 a night.  There are other motels off campus available for a higher fee.  For additional information contact Joe Keeler at jgklr2732@aol.com.

• A Great Little Lathe One Way – Don Karr’s Way

Check out the One Way lathe made by
Don Karr. Pretty realistic by any standard. This miniature was turned and sculpted by Don as a scale model of our full sized club One Way lathe. Our congrats to Don on a great model!!

• Don Gasler Library Exhibit
Try to check out the woodturning exhibit at the Brooklyn Heights branch of the Cuyahoga County Library. The exhibit is by our own 2003/2004 Vice President Don Gasler.

• Collaborative AAW Totem Project

The Totem Project is gathering steam. Jim Bohmer and George Raeder have made several models of possible designs. The models represented different sized spindles and spacing, all in keeping with the AAW specifications. After careful review by the Board of Directors, some fundamental dimensions and characteristics were decided upon. Brian Becker is making some dimensioned drawings of the final specification for volunteers to follow in making the spindles and disks. More discussion on finishing and decoration to come.
