The Woodworker's Store

This major annual fundraiser of the Northcoast Woodturners generates the funds which provide outside demonstrators and new equipment.

Open every drawer, cupboard and box and look for those great-but-seldom-used tools, jigs, motors, etc. you no longer need or want. Pick out a few unique turning blanks or special pieces of wood to donate for this great cause.

Only good stuff other members are likely to buy, NO JUNK i.e. non-working electrical tools, greasy/rusty whatevers. [Unsold items must be taken home by the original donors.]

Come prepared to buy and know that your auction purchases support our programming and further our chapter enhancement.

Note: Show table, Raffle and Library will not be open during this event as all time and tables will be dedicated to the auction.

President's Turn
by King Heiple

To everyone.  At the end of the December meeting I turn the new gavel over to George Raeder as president, Don Gasler as VP and there will also be several other new officers/directors.  I have served two years as Vice-President/Program Chair and two years as President. They have been fun years but hard work. [I will enjoy moving to the back and being told to shut up, no one can hear with you talking!]

There are about 10 [or maybe it's really 20] members who make it all happen, from donuts to sound system, newsletter, video set up and library, raffle, attendance and clean up and chairs away.  You know who you are!  Nothing I can say equals my appreciation of your efforts.  I plan to join your ranks in the future.

King Heiple

NOVEMBER MEETING REVIEW

At our November meeting, three founding members of North Coast Woodturners were granted Honorary Lifetime Memberships for their years of dedication and service to the club. Our thanks and appreciation go out to fellow woodturners Don Karr, Joe Quisenberry, Stan Starry, Sr. for their efforts and inspiration. (Photo to the right.)

Club Challenge: Gavel

Winner – Jim Bohmer Jim donated his winning gavel from two years ago to our departing President, King Heiple; and again won this year. His gavel will be carried by George Raeder, our new President, for the next two years. Thanks, Jim, for your talent and generosity.

Dear Fellow Wood Turners,

Having passed my 85th birthday, I figured that I had climbed every mountain and walked every mile that I wanted. It was time for me to put away all the tools and hang up my apron for the last time. Something, however, told me that I should attend one more meeting of the Wood Turners Club. Wouldn't you know, two of my oldest friends and I were called up to receive plaques that made us life time members of the club.

When I started this Club in Cleveland so many years ago, I never would have imagined such an honor being given to me. What a pleasant and unexpected surprise! I can never fully express my appreciation to the nicest group of people a man could have the privilege of knowing.

I'm wondering, though, if this honor was bestowed upon me by all my good friends so that they can challenge me to that one final project---”turning” a casket. From the bottom of my heart, I say many thanks to all of you.

Thanks for the wonderful memories.

Stan Stary Sr.

November Demo - “From Tree to Bowl” by King Heiple

Thanks, King, for a very informative look into the cutting, storing, and preparation of wood for future turning as well as several tips on roughing bowls. The tips on holding the roughed and dried bowls were excellent. Click here for demo pictures and handout.

Arrowmont Totem Project - George Raeder and Jim Bohmer offered a design for the Arrowmont totem segment that our club will be turning. The totem will have a top and bottom turned to fit to the adjoining segments, then 8 members or member teams will turn spindle objects pieces. The spindles will be about 6 inches in diameter and 15 _” tall. The tenons and length must be exact and will be provided in the near future. Volunteers for turning were Tom Heffernan, Tony Nasca, Bill Noce, Joe Quisenberry, Paul Lalonde, Brian Becker, Jim Bohmer, Chester Gordon, Jim Pugh and John Blainer. The finish was discussed but not decided. This will be discussed further at the January meeting.

Craft Supply provided us with many catalogs and several $10 and $15 gift certificates which will be used for club awards through the next year. Please show our thanks by supporting this fine vendor.

The January Club Challenge will be dedicated to Environmental Education and Preservation in the form of an object to be donated to the Shaker Heights one tree project. There were approximately 20 pieces of red oak ready to turn that were provided for members to make objects from. The items will be auctioned in a benefit to support the Shaker Heights Environmental Education and Preservation program. There will be three prizes for the items that bring the most money to the program. 1st prize is $100, 2nd - $50 and 3rd - $25. The prize winners will be announced in August, 2003. The items must be made from the red oak provided by the club, but may be trimmed with inlace, etc. For more information, contact Tom Heffernan.

SANDING DISKS AND SANDING CLOTH CHEAP! - King Heiple

We lost our club member source several years ago for sanding belt cutoffs and ends at only a buck a pound! But I have found another economical source for sanding cloth and now also for velcro backed disks.

It is called The Sandpaper Outlet, a one lady operation, on Route 87 [just east of route 306 about 2-3 miles on north side of road, obvious sign]. Official address is 10418 Kinsman Rd. [Rt. 87] Newbury, OH tel: 440.564.7151 or 888.692.1972 Always best to call first, not there every day. Her name is Anita Ferrando.

Most recently she got in 600-900 12" velcro backed sandpaper disks in grits from 50-150, and these go for only 25 cents apiece! One 12" disk will make nine 3" disks and five 2" disks, not sure how many 2" only, but lots. This makes a disk hardly more than 2 cents each just for the work of cutting them out!

Some are aluminum oxide but most are garnet. Garnet doesn't last as long but actually sands finer. And at that price they become single use items.

I picked up 68 disks for $17 and will bring a stack to the Dec. meeting for those who might want some of them at my cost.

Her price for aluminum oxide cloth roll ends and cutoffs in her remainder boxes is $2 a pound, and usually you can find a fair assortments of grits.

THE OHIO VALLEY WOODTURNERS GUILD , a chapter of AAW, is presenting a Mini-Symposium October 17-19, 2003.  The Symposium will be located in Southwestern Indiana on the Ohio border.  It is minutes from the Cincinnati airport and four interstate highways.

Five well-known turners will be demonstrating for ten hours each during the three-day Symposium. They are Richard Raffan, Michael Lee, Bonnie Klein, Al Stirt, and Michael Mahoney.

The cost for the three days will be $235, which will include 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, Friday evening dinner, and the Saturday Banquet.  Rooms at the facility are available for $55 a night.  There are other motels off campus available for a higher fee.  For additional information contact Joe Keeler at jgklr2732@aol.com.

Thank you for your help in supporting our Turning 2003 Symposium.
Sincerely,
David Morrical, Vice President
Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild
