Thread Chasing with Bill Bettiker
Bill Bettiker will show us how to turn a 5/8" threaded rod and a matching nut - just like you would buy at the hardware store. Bill says
"thread chasing is an ancient technique that will challenge and delight (when mastered) today's turners. All we need are a few tools, some very hard wood, patience and a lot of practice."
This is one skill that has not been demonstrated at our club before and we look forward to seeing/learning something new.

President's Turn
by King Heiple

The AAW was founded at the Arrowmont School in Gatlinburg, TN and, as several of our original members remember a year or so later in 1990, the majority of the early chapters each did a turning that was combined into two totem poles on the grounds during the annual meeting that year.

These have badly deteriorated and we were asked this spring as one of the 25 original contributors if we would like to help in doing replacements.  We voted yes!

The final decision has been to replace, not restore and the following specifications are below. They are to assure that the pieces will all fit together, not interfere with the one above and below.

They may be cylindrical or globular, and details may be bigger than the specified diameter as long as they do not interfere with the one above or below.

- Height: 18", not including 2" spigot at top. [ 20" including spigot.]
- Maximum diameter of support module 20", not including any attached portions.
- A 4" diameter hole through the center from top to bottom.
- A 7" diameter rebate at the center of he bottom.
- A 6-3/4" diameter x 2" high spigot at the center of the top.

The main, central piece and peripherals and preferably all other parts, are to be of redwood or some species of wood that is resistant to rot or other forms of degradation.  The entire piece should be well protected using a high quality, exerior finish such as marine spar varnish or exterior surface oil.  It must be finished and shipped to Arrowmont, at Chapters expense, to arrive between March 1 and 31, 2003.

For pictures of the original totem pole, click
here.  I would ask that any member with any ideas would rough up a sketch and the directors will look at all of these next month so that we can select one or a blend and get started after the December meeting to be finished by March 1, 2003.

This will obviously be our version of a club project for the AAW annual meeting. Following is what I believe should be our "plan of attack."

First a design which emphasizes turning, but doesn't exclude some carved details [like maybe raven wings and beak?] must be created. I would be interested in trying a negative image, a la Gene Kangas, but it would need some sort of central core.

Second, we need to have a blank made. The best person I know that has a 16"+ jointer and can glue up major blanks is Joe Leonard, the carousel horse carver who lives just south of Parkman, Ohio. He did the blank for the walnut horses head/neck I carved year before last. I would propose asking him to joint and glue up the blank for us using Gorilla glue. Anyone else have ideas?
Contact me.

Third, source for nice 8/4 redwood or cedar in fairly wide widths for the glue up needs to be found. We could probably manage with 8" stock with careful glue up. Your suggestions?

Fourth: turning! Obviously should be done on one of the members Oneway or Stubby lathes over a day or two by at least 4-10 participating members. I'm reasonably sure that I, Bohmer and Pugh would all volunteer our lathes/facilities (with recording photographer!)

This should be a fun and challenging project between now and March 1 of next year! [only 6 months!] Let's go!

News Bits

We regret to report the passing of Bob Bowman of the Great Lakes Woodcarver's. Bob was a good friend to North Coast Woodturners and was the person largely responsible for our participation in the Wood Carver's Show. Please see the very nice obit in the Sept. 25 Plain Dealer - page B7 of the Metro section.

The September raffle earned $150 for our club treasury. Very special thanks to Doll Lumber and Woodcraft of Bedford for their extremely generous donation of very valuable turning stock. Please support these donors when you need lumber, tools and supplies.

Woodcraft of Bedford donated another 3" X 8" X 6' piece of mahogany for our annual holiday auction. This makes a total of two that will be auctioned in December. Thanks again to Mike and the gang at Woodcraft Bedford.

Solex Lighting will be sold in Berea at the next show on September 29th. If interested in more information, please contact
Jim Pugh.

Election of officers and directors will be at the November meeting. Tom Heffernan and his committee have developed the following slate of excellent candidates to lead the club over the next two years.
PRESIDENT: GEORGE RAEDER
VICE PRESIDENT: DON GASLER
TREASURER: JIM BOHMER
SECRETARY: CHESTER GORDON
NEWSLETTER EDITOR: BRIAN BECKER
DIRECTORS AT LARGE: JIM DUXBURY and BETTY WERNER
We will entertain additions to this slate at the Oct. and Nov. meetings and will conduct a paper ballot for any position necessary.

Show and Tell - an opportunity for us to demonstrate our skills, to share our ideas and to learn what others are doing. Show and tell also demonstrates our improvement as a club. Bring in your projects, beginners and experts. We can all learn from every project!

Congrats to NCWT member John Blainer whose pens and other items were chosen to be photographed and used in the recent Rockler's advertising flyer.

For Sale: Woodcut Bowl Saver complete with instructions and How To video. Some of you have seen it demonstrated at one of our meetings.
Asking $160. (Cost $225 new at Woodcraft). Contact Jim Pugh at a meeting or call 440-458-6224

Want to place an ad? E-mail info to

Please use our library. There are many excellent books, tapes and magazines for all skill levels.  Thanks to our librarians for keeping things on track and organized.

Congratulations Tom Hogarth, winner of the attendance award.

Very nice work by those who created candlesticks for the August Club Challenge.

And congratulations to the winners!
 Previous winner award: Bob Skinner
Segmented Candlestick

New Winner: Jim Bohmer
Pair of candlesticks

In each of the past two months, a winner was chosen in a category because it was the only entry, so remaining Club Challenges for 2002 will be presented in one category. Your ideas and suggestions for making the Club Challenge a more interesting and rewarding experience are requested. Please submit your ideas to any board member or editor by phone or email.

September Meeting Review
September 7, 2002

The Woodturner's prize for the September 28 - 29 Woodcarver's Show raffle was chosen by the club members at the September meeting. Many beautiful entries were submitted, several of which can be seen on the Show and Tell table. The entries were narrowed down to six entries by club membership biscuit vote . The six entries were then narrowed to three, then two, then one by hand vote of the membership. In a very, very close vote Betty Werner won with a beautiful Coolibah bowl decorated with a runic inscription. A $150 prize to Betty in exchange for the beautiful work.

All of the finalist entries, and many of the items not chosen as finalist entries for that matter, would have made a very favorable representation of our club at the show. Congratulations to all who entered an item.

Hands On Sessions

The hands on session was a great hit. Several "students" learned a great deal from our instructors. Five lathes were set up along with a sharpening center. Sharpening techniques, bowl turning and spindle turning was taught. Thanks to King, Jims (Pugh and Duxbury), Dick Gray, and John Blainer for volunteering their time to be instructors. This is a great way to hone your skills and learn from our more experienced turners. Join in!!
