September, 2002 - Hands-On Session

Hands-on is a great way for our more experienced turners to share their knowledge and experience with less experienced turners. Five of our more expert members volunteered their time to share their expertise with several of our other turners. I am not going to say inexperienced, because some of the turners that signed up for the hands-on sessions were fairly experienced themselves. I will say that everyone learned something, no matter what the starting level. The hands-on sessions are a great way to learn new tips and tricks and to share some expertise.

There were five lathes set up, three for faceplate (bowl) turning and two for spindle turning. Thanks to our instructors, King Heiple, Jim Pugh, Dick Gray, Jim Duxbury and John Blainer.

Marc Schreiber turns a bowl under the direction of King Heiple.
Rudy Mann works on a bowl under the direction of Dick Gray.
Jim Pugh demonstrates spindle turning.
Jim Duxbury shows the finer points of spindle turning to new member Deborah Tonich as husband Joseph, also a new member, looks on.
And after the learning, comes the other normal club activity.........

Great job by the instructors and great fun for all involved. The hands-on sessions are a highly recommended activity for all club members. This is a curriculum that will be held at least two times each year, possibly more if there is enough interest. Drop a note or message to the club officers if you are interested in attending a session.
