ROAD TRIP!
Sat. May 12 at 9:30AM we are invited to join the Buckeye Club’s meeting to tour the mill operation at Doll Lumber. From log to kiln dry. They are a large operation with large stock of native woods including much curly maple and cherry! They have begun cutting turning blanks also which will be for sale. They are 3 mi. south of 422 on Ohio 534, [obvious with big sign]. From south or far west you could use I-80, exit route 44 then about 12 miles
May Meeting Agenda
& Fundamentals of Woodturning Program
Our regular May meeting will include a discussion of the proposed charter, election of members-at-large for the Board of Directors, and a demonstration on Turning Mushrooms and Flowers by Don Gasler.
Following the regular meeting, we will have a mini-workshop, entitled Fundamentals of Woodturning. This program is by reservation only, and we already have all 10 spots reserved, as well as alternates. However, the response to this offering suggests that it will become a regular feature. Designed to provide hands-on experience to newer turners, we will use all 4 of the club’s lathes, and the sharpening station. Attendees will be paired off with one experienced turner at each station. Look for a full review in
the next newsletter.
Stan Stary, Jr. has a video and paperwork from Ultra Speed Products, Inc. who distribute Turbo Carver. A dental type mini-hand piece at 400,000 rpm. Similar to what Frank Sudol peddled 4 years ago. The video is 25 min and fairly interesting and nicely done. Video was sent free to Gt.Lks.Wdcvrs with promotional deal of 25% off of orders for 3 or more. Stan would like to know if others in NCWT would be interested. Cost of unit is $207 less 25% = $155. Shows egg carving and piercing , glass carving, gunstock carving, inlays, etc. We will try to show it after Don Gasler’s demo, if we can get the video equipment working.
Turn&Learn: Lidded turning
east on OH 303 to OH 534, then north several miles to Doll. This is perhaps 45- 60 minutes southeast of Cleveland
... an Invitation
Bruce Lance is offering a workshop to show how Frank Sudol does the deep hollowing of his vessels, the carving, and airbrushing. Bruce needs 8-10 people to make this work- call him at 330-633-9622, or email at:

Great Lakes Woodcarver’s Show, Strongsville. Sat/Sun Sept. 29/30. We now have 10 or 12 full table takers for this and 5-6 who will bring things to put on “club” tables, [probably 2 of them]. So looks like we will occupy 12-14 tables and set up two demo lathes. Should be fun. I will continue to ask for additional sign-up at the May meeting and then commit to Stan Stary, Jr and Bob Bowman our table number right after that. Call me if you will miss this meeting but would like to participate. Remember, you can sell at this show.
FOR SALE:
Tom Nero has a craftsman thickness planer, scroll saw and bandsaw for sale. Used only a weekends by a “little old auctioneer.” Call Tom at (440) 526-4138
George Raeder made this mount for his son’s experimental airplane propeller
Bowl with a raised, carved leaf
Quick Notes....
Our thanks to Stan Stary Sr., and especially Alan Dylag at Empire Surveilence, for the donation of a brand new VCR. We hope to try it out Saturday!
Cleveland Enterprise magazine featured Rosemary Macedonio, and talks of how she relieves the stress of legal life, with woodturning.
Hopefully, if everything went according to schedule, Joe Quisenberry was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show.
Please remember to park across the street, and bring raffle items!

PROGRAM FOR APRIL 6th, 2001
(Clockwise, from right)
Turn&Learn: Jim Bohmer carries a torch- the winning entry in the “spindle turned” project.
Turning a ball: It seems that most of us have a curiosity about turning a spherical shape (ball) and don’t really know where to start. Jim Shuster will show the method/tools he uses to turn a ball which will let us know it isn’t all that difficult. Perhaps in the future our Turn & Learn project will be to turn a ball so pay attention as Jim shows us how.
Steadyrest: The first part of the program Dickson Gray will show/discuss a lathe steadyrest similar to the one demonstrated by Frank Sudol except made out of plywood. Dick uses his steadyrest for deep hollow forms.
